How to Maximise Your Trading 212 Free Shares
Whilst getting Trading 212 free shares may feel like a freebie, and it is, for the purposes of ensuring a good return it may be best to consider what you would do should you have paid for the share. Just because something is free doesn’t make it good!
The best approach is to consider what you’d like to invest in before receiving your free shares. You can find our guide to picking the best ETF here.
Once you receive your shares you can check whether they fit with your investment strategy. If they do, then great, keep the free shares. If not however there is nothing to stop you selling the shares and reinvesting the cash.
To grow your wealth the best approach is to treat the free shares as simply an extra cash bonus and then invest them as you would the rest of your funds.
That said, and I’m certainly guilty of this, it can be fun to have a couple of random shares and see how they grow!
Free Share Caveats
If you refer someone, your free shares will appear in the account you opened first. Similarly, if you are referred, your free shares will appear in the account you open first. As a result, be careful you don’t accidentally go over your ISA allowance.
Whilst you can sell the shares you receive immediately, the value of the sold share must remain in the account for 30 days. This is to stop people opening an account and cashing out straight away.
Both parties must adhere to the terms and conditions otherwise both parties will lose the free shares or equivalent monetary value.
Customers are limited to a maximum of 5 referrals.
Remember if your free share is in a general investment account you are not protected from tax. As a result should you go over the threshold for dividends received, or Capital Gains Tax by selling the share, you’ll need to declare this. The Trading 212 free shares on their own are not going to push you above the tax allowances, however if you have other investments remember to declare these additions.
As with any promotion, make sure to read the terms and conditions.
My Experience With Trading 212 Free Shares
I gained from Trading 212 free shares when I referred a couple of friends during Trading 212’s last promotion. I gained a fractional share worth £12.46 in BP and a fractional share worth £12.01 in Louis Vuitton. Neither of these companies met with my investment approach and hence I sold these and bought into a global ETF instead. Looking at what I would have earned by holding onto the shares, I made the right choice! In addition I now have a cleaner portfolio.
